field budding and grafting, viticultural operation of planting rootstock rootlings in their vineyard position and inserting scion buds. Many types of insertion may be used but chip budding is common. The success rate is highest in warm to hot climates but can be erratic, and careful attention is needed to watering, nutrition, and the tending of each vine. This method is therefore most suitable for small vineyards with good soils and a well-trained workforce.
