Meskheti, one of Georgia’s most ancient winemaking regions, this is the origin of some of the oldest Georgian grape varieties and is in the very early stages of a challenging revival. Vineyards are traditionally terraced high on the slopes along Mtkvari River at 900–1,700 m (2,950–5,580 ft), where it is very dry and irrigation is needed.
