glassy winged sharpshooter, leafhopper insect (Homalodisca vitripennis) of great significance in some southern California wine regions since the 1990s as it is a vector of pierce’s disease. It is able to fly longer distances than other leafhoppers, so the disease spreads more quickly. It has been detected in Australia but has not become established and poses no immediate threat to vineyards as the Pierce’s disease bacterium is not present.
