Literature of Wine: The golden age

Appears in
Oxford Companion to Wine

By Jancis Robinson

Published 2006

  • About

In the number of wines it talks about, Henderson’s book is overwhelmed by what must be the most remarkable book on wine ever published, the Topographie de tous les vignobles connus (1816) by André jullien, a Parisian wine merchant who was born in Burgundy. In this are rated all the wines, not just of France, but of all known wine regions of the time including California, South America, South Africa’s Cape, and ‘Chinese Tartary’! He forecasts (or perhaps helps to shape) the 1855 classification in Bordeaux by rating as first-class wines Lafitte (sic), Latour, Ch-Margaux, and Haut-Brion.
