lodge, term used by British shippers of port and madeira for a building where wine is stored and matured, especially in Vila Nova de Gaia in oporto and Funchal in Madeira respectively. It is derived from the Portuguese word loja meaning ‘shop’ or ‘warehouse’. The Portuguese themselves tend to use the term armazém.
