Nuits, Côte de, named after the principal town of Nuits-St-Georges, this is the northern half of the escarpment of the côte d’or, producing the greatest red wines of Burgundy, from the Pinot Noir grape, and very occasional white wines. The principal villages, from north to south, are gevrey-chambertin, morey-st-denis, chambolle-musigny, vougeot, vosne-romanée, Flagey-échezeaux, and nuits-st-georges. See also marsannay. The soils on the lower part of the slope tend to be much more fertile than the main parent rock because more immature soil has been incorporated.
