  • About

Olasz Rizling or Olaszrizling is the most common name in hungary for the white grape variety known in Austria as welschriesling (under which more details appear). The variety is now Hungary’s single most planted vine variety, although it was introduced less than a century ago. The Olaszrizling produced around lake Balaton, Somló, and Eger is particularly prized and, in general, the warmer climate imbues Hungarian versions of this variety with more weight than their counterparts in Austria. Plantings totalled 4,664 ha/11,520 acres in 2011, in virtually every wine region and a wide range of styles.
