Pic-St-Loup, one of the most successful named crus within the languedoc aoc in southern France and the least dependent on carignan grapes or co-operatives. The zone, with mixed but largely calcareous soils, includes 12 communes around the eponymous and dramatic 658 m peak north of Montpellier (including one called Claret—although the robust red wines made here much more closely resemble southern Rhône than any bordeaux). The mainly red with some rosé wines should be blends, with the Languedoc holy trinity of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre favoured, and Cinsaut allowed for rosés.
