Romania, sometimes spelt Roumania or Rumania is eastern Europe’s quantitatively most important wine producer The quality of its wines has improved considerably in recent years. In 2012, there were 183,170 ha/452,623 acres of vineyard planted to wine grapes, of which just over 97,500 ha/240,928 acres were Vitis vinifera according to data from Romania’s National Office for Vine and Wine Products. In 2013 the harvest reached 5.9 million hl/156 million gal, partly thanks to around 30,000 ha of productive new vineyards planted since 2007 coming onstream.
