rot, loose term for the decay, with microbial interference, of any part of the vine. Rot is most commonly used as a synonym for botrytis bunch rot, which is the most important sort of rot for wine quality. Other fruit rots include black rot, sour rot, white rot; rots of other vine parts include armillaria root rot and texas root rot.
