seedling, the young plant that develops when a seed germinates. Grape seeds have tiny embryos which develop rapidly as the seed germinates, growing a freely branching tap-root and a shoot. The growth of seedlings is important in vine breeding, but not otherwise in commercial viticulture, as vines are propagated from cuttings (see vegetative propagation).
