Since joining the EU, Spain has brought her wine law into line with that of other European countries. There is now a four-tier system administered by INDO, acronym for the Madrid-based Instituto Nacional de Denominaciones de Origen. Every autonomous region, however, controls its own appellations, following the lead of Cataluña through INCAVI, the Institut Català de la Vinya i del Vi, and Castilla-La Mancha through IVICAM, the Instituto de la Viña y el Vino de Castilla-La Mancha. Only the appellations encompassing more than one autonomous region (Rioja, Jumilla, and Cava) are controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture through INDO.
