Stomata

stomata (plural of stoma), minute openings on the surface of leaves bordered by two guard cells which open and close, thus regulating the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the air chambers inside the leaf, especially of water out and carbon dioxide in (see transpiration and photosynthesis). The stomata of the grapevine occur only on the underside of each leaf blade, and there are also some on berries.
