It was once quite widely cultivated in roussillon, where it is known as tourbat, or Malvoisie du Roussillon, but was almost abandoned before new and healthier plant material was imported from Sardinia in the 1980s. As with grenache noir, known as Cannonau in Sardinia, it is believed to have been brought to the island from Spain when Sardinia was part of the AragΓ³n kingdom, but this is unproved.
