Toul, Côtes de, small aoc in the far north east of France which remains, with the even more northerly French wine region on the moselle, as a reminder of what was once a flourishing Lorraine wine industry. It was subsequently marginalized by industrialization, injudicious replanting after phylloxera, the First World War, and the delimitation of the nearby champagne region which had once drawn wine from here. Gamay with some Pinot Noir is responsible for the local pale pink speciality vin gris. Pinot Noir is the only ingredient in Toul’s relatively light reds. auxerrois is the most successful variety for dry whites.
