verticillium wilt, fungal disease which causes apparently healthy vines to collapse suddenly. The fungus Verticillium dahliae lives in the soil, and attacks new vineyards. Young vines are usually affected, and often the vine recovers. There is no control apart from avoiding planting on sites where the fungus exists.
