weighing of grapes is an important operation at any centre where grapes are received from a number of different growers who are paid by weight. This applies to most wine co-operatives and many individual wineries, even if the more progressive take other factors such as grape quality and health into account before determining price. Weighing is normally done with large platform scales on which the lorry is weighed full and empty.

It is also important to weigh grapes before pressing in order to measure the volume of juice extracted in relation to the fruit weight. See, for example, champagne for the regulations concerning pressing and yield.
