western grapeleaf skeletonizer, a vine pest and native insect of Mexico and the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, first found in California in 1941 in San Diego county. The young larvae feed on the soft leaf tissue, leaving a skeleton framework. Chemical control is effective, but timing is critical. Left unchecked this insect will completely defoliate a vine, seriously affecting ripening.
