Xenophon, writer in Ancient greece in the late 5th century bc famous for his Anabasis. In the Economics, a dialogue between a farmer, Ischomachos, and the famous philosopher Socrates, the planting and care of vines is discussed: vines should be planted in well-dug earth, at an angle, and the earth should be trodden down around the vine.
