I’d buy these for twenty-five cents a pop at school, and they were nothing like the crunchy chocolate chip cookies sold in stores or the chewy, dense desserts of Xi’an. These were fresh, soft, melty, and almost without a bite entirely. I was obsessed. During recess, I’d play and win marble matches, and then sell my winning marbles to the other kids so I could buy these cookies with the money.
