Being a Queens resident, I rarely venture to Brooklyn. But if I’m on my way to the beach, I might swing by Sunset Park for some spicy and sour rice noodles. Since I’m no Brooklyn boy, though, my friend, food writer, and Brooklyn native Patty Lee is going to give you the lay of the land.

“I grew up along 8th Ave (as we called it) in the 1990s and early 2000s, and a lot of the immigrant families there were from 台山 (Toi San or Tai Shan), my own family included. The whole place felt like one giant extended family. My brother and I are two years apart, so we would end up in classes with other sets of siblings or cousins from the neighborhood who were sons and daughters of our parents’ friends. We’d see each other at school on the weekdays, but also at dim sum on Sunday mornings.
