OG Chinatown has had a little renaissance lately, with hip new restaurants popping up on its old-timey streets. Some of these places, though, have been around for a hundred years, like Nom Wah Tea Parlor. Originally a bakery, this dim sum joint was sold to my friend Wilson Tang’s uncle in the ’70s, and now Wilson runs the place (plus its sister restaurants and offshoots). Here, he shares his Chinatown, and what to know about it.

“I actually spent grade school and high school in Queens, because my parents were afraid I would follow the wrong crowd in Chinatown in the ’80s. Luckily, I spent most of my weekends and summers in the neighborhood, and I remember having to speak Cantonese everywhere I went. I would literally get laughed at if English came out of my mouth.
