For our first session together, I told photographer Andy Sewell we would do two weeks in one afternoon. With this in mind I bought the two nicest things I could think of at the time. I had access to the most wonderful ceps, and the fishmonger was banging on about some terrific diver-caught scallops. I bought both and decided to wait until inspiration came to me.

I fondled the huge and incredibly firm ceps. I gazed fondly at the scallops. Inspiration did come over me, but not in the way I planned. It was obvious and irresistible. I would do them together. The launch of the new-look Financial Times magazine deserved something rather grand, after all, so it was going to get it.
