Eid was the best time at Dada and Dadi’s house, and it wasn’t just about the food. Being an only child meant that I got the most Eidee (present money). In my most polite voice, I’d greet my aunts and uncles with ‘As-salam-alaikum, Eid Mubarak (peace be with you, have a blessed Eid)’, then I’d have to quietly accept sweaty kisses and hugs. I’d grab the kitsch envelopes with bright pink, green and red roses and leaves printed on shiny paper and move on to the next relative with a fake smile plastered on my face. Out of all the cousins, I’d be the ‘richest’ at the end of the day.
