Guddo Phuppo was a fine balance of free-spiritedness and practicality. She was always clear that she didn’t want to pursue a ‘respectable’ career of doctor or engineer, as my other aunts did, and she’d worked hard to become a schoolteacher, completing college and going on to do teacher training. I admired the way her passion for teaching fuelled her – and even though her marriage was arranged, she made sure she got to know her husband-to-be. She married on her own terms and she did what she loved; I wanted to be like her.
