Country Club Apartments was a high-rise development, a new style of apartments in the Sea View area of Clifton. We’d rented a small one-bedroom apartment, with terrazzo floors and a simple functional kitchen. From the eighth floor the view was spectacular, and both the lounge and our bedroom overlooked the sea. After just a week in our new home, I felt free to be myself.

Juni had started a new job with a local bank, and each morning I’d get up early and make him breakfast: pancakes and parathas, sometimes boiled eggs and spicy potatoes.
