Our friends had a big monkey swing, right in the middle of their vegetable patch. I kept wondering if I would ever see a monkey as I swung up and down and dreamed of being in the circus with the other acrobatic and stylish swinging ladies. There were ducks following their mamma around everywhere while our mammas were inside rolling out trays of pizza for our lunch. We would roll down the steep and grassy hill and stare up, squinting, at the bright sun through the kaleidoscope of our minds to see dinosaur-and butterfly-shaped clouds. After a thick slice of pizza we might fiddle about making mud pies, or sit in a circle and play princesses for a while. The longest-haired girl would always be the princess. We had time to follow the trail of snails all the way to where it finished, and then examine the snails before we moved them to brighter green lawns, to better homes. We’d look for secret places filled with more and more secrets. At night then our mammas would pile us all into the same bath and there would be quite a bit of splashing about and water marks on the wall afterwards. We loved the soft pale fluffy towels that they would bundle us into and we would sit drying, smelling of soap and flicking through books.
