We have many visitors at the bakery and at our partner businesses. Visitors often want to know how we develop a Zingerman’s business. By telling the bakery’s story, we hope to show some of what is involved in building a locally rooted artisanal business.

We also wrote this book to honor Bakehouse staff and customers. We hope that the team, past and present, takes some pride in this book. More than 1,000 of us and millions of our actions have created the bakery. And our customers might be surprised at how much they inspire us during our daily work. Their enthusiasm for our food has sustained us. We are well aware of the responsibility placed on us when we are preparing food. Frank often says as we roll loaves of bread, “This is someone’s special loaf. Remember that.”
