The hamburger is no doubt the most global sandwich ever created. Its origins date back to the nineteenth century with the departure of Germans from the port of Hamburg towards a welcoming America. This sandwich, made of cooked minced meat served between two pieces of bread, became the standard dish of these trans-Atlantic crossings.
Once in the United States, ‘steak cooked Hamburg-style’ quickly found a place in the restaurants around New York harbour. It attracted a number of homesick Germans, but also people from all corners of the globe.
