  • About
Joaquim Ferreira Pedro Luças & Filhos (1887) was the first canning factory in Matosinhos to dedicate itself to canning using salt – starting with pressed sardines and canned anchovies – and its salting warehouses were the first in the area. In 1918, Luças entered the export market, with typical products such as pickles and anchovies particularly popular in southern Europe. It remains to this day the leading brand in Greece.
In order to take advantage of new canning sterilisation techniques, the company partnered with another company with a factory in the Algarve, Viegas e Lopes. On 4 May, 1940, Domingos Ferreira Pedro (Luças), Adriano Ferreira Pedro (Luças), José Leal, Agostinho da Costa Esteves, Lúcio Lopes (Junior) e José Viegas, formed the company Luças & Cª Lda.
