Pinhais & Cia, Lda. was founded in 1920 in Matosinhos, a fishing village near Porto, as a small family company dedicated to the production of canned fish. Almost a Century later, the company remains with the same family and is recognised in the industry for producing the very best canned fish following the most traditional processes – having made a positive decision to continue to use traditional methods rather than those used in other canned food industries. What makes this method so unique and characteristic is that very little modern technology is used across the whole process. One can almost say that everything is handcrafted, with machines only used at the sterilisation and shaping phase. Current manager António Pinhal oversees about 120 employees dedicated to the production of sardines in virgin olive oil, spicy olive oil and tomato sauce, alongside cans of mackerel in virgin olive oil. Brands including Nuri, Pinhais, Mabuti, Rios, Mascato, Amourette and Matapán are staples of the company portfolio.
