It’s amazing how a simple tool can hold so much sentimental value. A kitchen knife might seem like just a utensil, but in the hands of someone who loves to cook, it can become a cherished possession. For me, that knife is a Sabatier and one of the first knives I owned.
One day, I was using this knife and I dropped it – the handle snapped off at the end. I was devastated. It was one of my favourites and I knew I had to get it fixed, but I didn’t know where to start.
My father was an excellent cook, and he taught me a lot about food. He was always experimenting with new recipes and techniques. He stepped in, took the broken knife from me and examined it carefully. He then spent a few hours in his workshop, carefully moulding something (I still don’t know what it is!) to the end of the handle. When he was finished, he presented me with my repaired knife.
