The city lies on the edge of the barren Lut Desert/Dasht-e lut but it is also surrounded by mountains. The most important city of southeast Iran, it has a long history and is mentioned in ancient inscriptions. In the time of Darius (550–486 BCE) the rosewood/jag used to build the palace at Susa was brought from the province, then part of Parsa (present-day Pars Province, of which Shiraz is the capital). The province continues to be rich in natural resources, especially copper. The city is home to many ancient Zoroastrian fire temples and historic mosques, and was an important stop along the Silk Road.
