Although the Internet is an excellent tool for tracking down elusive titles and comparing the condition and prices of books on offer, the new collector needs to be cautious in purchasing old books online. Prices can vary enormously for an almost identical item. Even more than in a bookstore, you must know what you are buying and how much it is worth. Every book has its own character, particularly a used book, and there is no substitute for holding it in your hand. I’ve been disappointed by Internet purchases several times. Thus, if a book predates 1900, I recommend that you take a personal look at it unless you have prior experience with the seller.
