He was a wealthy man, but gave away all of his inherited wealth, using part of it for dowries to save three impoverished maidens. Nicholas threw bags of gold through the window of the house, though in later stories he used the chimney to bring his gifts, foreshadowing the traditional story that Sinterklaas or his helpers come down the chimney with presents. This is also how he got to be called the ‘marriage maker’, prompting the custom of creating a peperkoek with the same name.
