A recipe for a feast

The first printed cookbook in the Dutch language, Een notabel boecxken van cokeryen, was published in Brussels in the early days of printing, around 1510. The whole book is dedicated to recipes for weddings, banquets and other festivities.

That is why this book is arranged loosely by feast and festival, starting from the 12 days of Christmas, with waffles and winter breads; pancakes for Candlemas and Carnival; pretzels for Lent; vlaai and fried dough for Kermis and all the special sweet treats of Saint Nicholas and Saint Martin. A whole year of festival baking.
