| Apple Purée | Choose sweet, ripe fruit. Wash, peel and core 4 medium apples; cut into small chunks. Place in saucepan with ¼ cup water or unsweetened apple juice. Cook on low heat 6 to 8 minutes, until very soft. Purée to desired consistency, adding a little cooking liquid. (Cinnamon may cause an allergic reaction, so check first with your doctor before adding.) Makes 8 cubes. |
| Apple Pear Purée | Prepare as for Apple Purée, using 2 apples and 2 pears. Makes 8 cubes. |
| Apple or Pear Purée with Blueberries | Prepare as for Apple Purée, using 3 apples or pears and ¾ cup blueberries. Add a little rice cereal to thicken. (Blueberries may cause an allergic reaction, so check first with your doctor.) Makes 8 cubes. |
| Avocado Purée | Avocado is actually a fruit. Cut ripe avocado in half and remove pit. Scoop out flesh. Purée to desired consistency. Add some of baby’s usual milk if too thick. Serve immediately. (Tip: Wrap leftover avocado purée tightly. Refrigerate or freeze—or make guacamole.) Makes 3 to 4 cubes. |
| Banana Purée | Peel half of a small ripe banana; cut into small chunks. Purée to desired consistency. If desired, add some of baby’s usual milk to thin it down. Serve immediately. Bananas blend well with other fruits. (Tip: Make extra purée and freeze to use in muffins or smoothies.) Makes 1 serving. |
| Peach Purée | Choose sweet, ripe fruit. Cut an X on base of fruit. Plunge 4 peaches into boiling water for 1 to 2 minutes. Drain, cool and peel. Cut into small chunks and discard pit. Steam until very soft, 5 to 6 minutes. Purée to desired consistency, adding a little water from bottom of steamer. (Combines well with Apple Purée.) Makes 8 cubes. |
| Pear Purée | Prepare as for Apple Purée, but cook pears for 5 to 6 minutes. Makes 8 cubes. |
| Plum, Nectarine or Apricot Purée | Prepare as for Peach Purée. Makes 4 to 6 cubes. |
