All you need to know about “Juju Dhau – King of Yogurt” from Bhaktapur, Nepal
Bhaktapur, located in the eastern part of Kathmandu, is famous for its unique architecture, woodcarvings, pagoda-style temples, and narrow streets. Two sites within Bhaktapur, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Changunarayan Temple, have been inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Bhaktapur is also famous for its Juju Dhau, a delicious, creamy, sweetened custard-like yogurt. “Juju” means “king” and “dhau” mean “yogurt” in Newari, and “juju dhau” literally translates to “king of yogurt.” It has been a delicacy since ancient times, from the Malla Dynasty to the Shah King’s era. There are multiple competing stories about its origin. One popular version is that after the yogurt makers of Bhaktapur won a competition, the Malla kings dubbed it the “king of yogurt.”
