Rice is cultivated in many regions of Nepal, and is one of its most important crops. The rice seedling transplanting and harvesting seasons are times of great anticipation and happiness in the community. Nepali farmers celebrate the occasion with a feast accompanied by music and dance. In the hilly part of the country, however, land conditions and lack of rain make rice difficult to grow and thus an expensive luxury. In these higher elevations, locals eat corn, millet, wheat, barley, and buckwheat.
