The first stage of this ancient agricultural process is to gather the wheat in large handfuls, which are cut at the exact upper part of the ear, where the grains grow from the spikes, using a customary sickle. The younger members of the farming community are usually the reapers, as the work is arduous and the authentic old-fashioned scythe is heavy. The implement is traditionally called a manjal, although colloquially amongst the younger Arabic farmers it is known as the hashushi, the name they give to the tool that cuts the “smoking” grass…
