Teff (Eragrostis tef) is an annual cereal grass and a member of the Poaceae plant genus. Originating in Ethiopia and Eritrea, it was domesticated from wild grass over 6000 years ago, and has since become the main staple of African cuisine. Known also as William’s Lovegrass, this indigenous seed was so minute it was named teffa in the Amharic language, meaning “lost”. Tiny in stature and packed full of nutrients, this “tufted” cereal has gained huge, global recognition as a gluten-free alternative grain, and has since found a place as a healthy addition to many Western cuisines.
