‘What does The Good Table mean?’, my publisher asked me again and again throughout the tussles to give this book a title. ‘People will think it’s a carpentry book’, she said, or ‘It sounds too old-fashioned, a thing of pounds, ounces and lampreys’, was her other strategy. I resisted the urge to look pleased at the latter remark.

Clinging on fiercely, in the end I won only through the deployment of staring silences and an infuriating habit of telling her that a lot of people she had never met thought it a fine name for a cookbook.
