Many people raise their own hens, which is not difficult in an ordinary garden as all you need is a small amount of land and enough room for a cage and an open-air run. Although they certainly can’t fly very high or very far, you must not forget that domestic chickens are not completely flightless, although their skills in this department do vary considerably. Some breeds, especially the lighter birds, can fly short distances, such as over fences or into trees (where they would naturally roost), so you can make it easier if you choose breeds that are poor flyers.
