My Greek Yiayia Anastasia (who you’ll find) is the inspiration behind Grand Dishes. Before Iska and I ambitiously set out to document the recipes of the world’s grandmothers, this began as a personal project to finally pin down Yiayia’s recipes.
One of the eldest of ten siblings who was put to work ‘out on the land’ and never went to school, Yiayia had an education in planting by the moon’s cycle, wild-herb foraging, sourdough-bread baking and cooking rich Corfiot dishes like cinnamon stifado stew in a pot over a fire she would build herself.
