Our final trek is south from Australia, where we come to the coldest place on earth. Antarctica is without a doubt one of the most unique and unusual continents in the world. The southernmost continent does not have many inhabitants other than its wildlife, including various kinds of penguins and seals. Despite the intensely cold climate, researchers from several countries have set up over thirty stations that run either seasonally or year-round! According to the Antarctica Treaty of 1959, which began with only twelve nations but now has fifty-three countries who have signed on, “Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only;” this means that locations in Antarctica are primarily used to research various types of sciences, including astronomy, environmental science, biology, and many more!
