  • About
Clouds of smoke and ash and sputtering molten lava erupt from the center of Mount Yasur on the southernmost tip of Vanuatu. Among the most active volcanoes on the planet, it’s been bubbling continuously for more than 800 years. In Vanuatu lore, Yasur is believed to be the home of an enigmatic god-man named John Frum, living within the molten lava, waiting to be reborn. It’s one of the few volcanoes on earth that you can approach on foot, making it an attraction for brave tourists. It’s a beacon to the Ni-Vanuatu—the island’s natives—of the origins of their volcanic archipelagic home, but also a potential signal of its demise.
