The city of Bologna is famous throughout the world for its superb cuisine. Perhaps less well known is the fact that it lies at the heart of Emilia-Romagna, a region celebrated throughout Italy for the range and quality of its ingredients and dishes. From the Adriatic coast to the inland plains and river valleys, the whole area is blessed with excellent products and a wonderful culinary heritage. Now one of the richest areas of Europe, Emilia-Romagna has developed a strong economy based on the building of cars and motorcycles. Agriculture, however, is still important. Crops, including cereals, potatoes, maize, tomatoes and onions grow well here, along with many varieties of fruit and grapes used in the production of wine. Cattle and pig breeding are also highly developed, and farm co-operatives are successful here.
