The far north-eastern corner of Italy is known as Italia Nord-Orientale, a sub-region made up of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige, and is distinct from the rest of Italy. For the most part, locals speak their own languages, using Italian only with Italians from more southerly regions. In agriculture, cuisine and climate they are closer to Austria, Germany and Slovenia than to southern Italy, with a landscape of Alpine peaks and lakes.
