North-eastern Italy, from the Adriatic Sea to the eastern Alps, is situated in a strategic position at the main crossroads between the Mediterranean and northern Europe. It is known to have been inhabited before the first Bronze Age people settled there around 2000 BCE. Later, the peaceful Veneto people began to cultivate the land. They lived beside the rivers in wooden dwellings similar to the present-day casoni of the Veneto lagoon, and were dedicated to farming, fishing, bronze-work and the breeding of horses.
