The Veneto was part of the powerful Venetian Republic for more than 1,000 years, between the 7th and 18th centuries, something that has given this region a very particular and rich identity. It is bordered to the east by Friuli-Venezia Giulia, to the south by Emilia-Romagna, to the west by Lombardy, to the north by Trentino-Alto Adige, and its most northern tip borders with Austria. The famous vineyards are fed by the mighty Adige River, which passes through the city of Verona as it winds its way south to empty itself into the Venetian lagoon: the enclosed bay of the Adriatic, featuring ponds, marshland and islands, and the city of Venice itself.
